The Western Cape Schools Cycling committee, with Annelize Ziehl-Owens Chairlady and Ben Puddu as Vice-Chair is, looking forward to an exciting Spur Schools Mountain Bike League this year as more and more schools are getting their structures in order to recognise Cycling as an official school sport. “One of the new schools entering for the first time this year is Van Riebeeckstrand Primary School and we are looking forward to welcome even more schools entering, Annelize Ziehl-Owens”, said.
The schedule for the 4 Spur Schools MTB League Events for 2018 is as follow: (subject to change) 9 June (Southey Vines, Somerset West), 4 August (Stellenberg, Durbanville), 25 August (Montana, Worcester) and 15 September (Paul Roos, Stellenbosch).
Western Cape Schools Cycling is affiliated with South African Schools Cycling (SASC). SASC is a statuary body that was formed in 2014 to formalise and coordinate schools cycling in South Africa. SASC realises that to make cycling sustainable at school level it needs to have the necessary skills created or transferred to the school communities. These skills have been identified as coaching, commissairing and team management. “Subsequently courses were developed and we are grateful to report that South Africa’s top coaches Erica Green and Deon Carstens have offered their support in this regard,” Deon Steyn President of SASC said.
With the first SA XCO Cup that was successfully held in Stellenbosch the excitement is building up with the World Cup around the corner on 10 March in Stellenbosch where the likes of Nino Schurter and SA Top riders will be in action.
“Western Cape School Cycling Association is inviting all school riders not to miss out on this opportunity to watch their heroes in action and wishing everyone a great 2018 cycling season!”
Currently the focus is on mountain biking, but road cycling will be rolled out as soon as sponsorships can be secured.
The President of SA Schools Cycling, Deon Steyn will be presenting a SCHOOLS MTB TEAM MANAGER course in the Western Cape.
