The 94km route of the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge gives riders a once-a-year chance to experience the streets of Johannesburg without any other vehicles on the roads. On Sunday, 19 November 2017 the Cycle Challenge will celebrate the 21th edition and will once again start and finish at Riversands Commercial Park in Fourways. With an altitude gain of 1488m over about 94.7km it’s not for the faint-hearted with several short, sharp climbs near the end where professionals will battle for King and Queen of the Mountain prizes.
Beyond the physical challenge, cyclists can ride for a purpose by offering them an opportunity to use the race as a platform to raise funds for a cause or purpose close to their hearts. A special Blue Jersey is earned every year by the rider who manages to raise the most money for their purpose.
The Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge will once again be hosting a UCI 1.1 Women’s Race. The ranking afforded to the Cycle Challenge for the Women’s Race means that teams are invited to participate and gain valuable UCI points that count towards their world ranking, as well as their team’s world ranking.
The Telkom 947 Kiddies Ride offers a wonderful adventure with closed off routes where children aged 2-10 with different skills levels get to experience an exciting day out where winning is not the main focus. Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge has also joined forces with Trek Bikes, to bring the ‘Trek Troopers’ to the riders to help the last few groups in the time frame required before reaching cut-off’s along the way, or at the finish.
