In its eleventh year, the Spur Schools MTB League (SSMTBL) has seen record entries countrywide this season. The biggest Western Cape event drew more than 900 riders and large numbers are being expected for the regional finals on Saturday, 14 September 2019 at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch to represent their various Primary and High schools.
The top 10 High Schools heading into the regional final of the Spur Schools MTB League include: Paul Roos, Parel Vallei High School, Durbanville High School, HTS Drostdy, DF Malan High School, Montana High School, Hermanus High School, Rhenish Girls High School, SACS College and Curro Hermanus.
Paul Roos has been on top of the leader board since the inception of the league and is currently in a comfortable first overall with a total of 1456 points followed by Parel Vallei High School with 888 and Durbanville High School third with 627 points.
Other contenders vying for a spot on the top 10 schools list include HTS Drostdy, DF Malan High School, Montana High School, Hermanus High School, Rhenish Girls High School, SACS College and Curro Hermanus. After the event the Western Cape Schools Provincial team will be announced for the Inter-Schools final later this month.
The top 10 performing primary schools are: Van Riebeeckstrand, Kenridge, Paarl Boys, Durbanville, Totius, Eversdal, Paarl Gimnasium, Beaumont, Kayamandi, and Mikro Kuilsrivier. Van Riebeeckstrand is currently in the lead with 822 points, followed closely by Kenridge with 802 and Paarl Boys in third with 371 points.
During the event the SSMTBL primary and High school winners will be announced. The primary and High school that brings most “Gees” to the event will also be crowned as Team Spirit Winners and will receive the Spirit Trophy as well as R1500 Spur Voucher. The schools are currently preparing for the big day by practicing their “War Cries”.
The SSMTBL finals are going to be a celebration of a phenomenal season for Western Cape Schools Cycling. Other festivities on the day wil include a drumline by Paul Roos as well as a Matric Parade after the last event to say farewell to the matrics and wishing them the best for the future.
“This last event is going to be an absolute highlight of the season and is not to be missed as Schools Teams will be battling it out for top positions. It’s also extremely important for the High Schools as the Province is preparing for the Inter-Schools Finals at Wagpos High School on the 27-28 September 2019,” says Annelize Ziehl-Owens, Chairperson of Western Cape Schools Cycling.
