Bellville Velodrome was the venue for the annual Western Cape Track Championships which was held from 6-7 October 2018 and proudly sponsored by Sanlam. Hot and warm conditions set the perfect “playgorund” for great and fast racing which was displayed throughout the championships.
Riders from as young as 10 years old up till over 70 years registered for the event which in total saw close to 80 riders trying to raise the bar high as possible and it was obvious that racing was going too fast.
Day 1 saw riders competing in individual events for most of the day and the highlight of the day was when the Masters Men, Mark Liter-Petersen, Chrispin Fourie and Morne Van Greunen took to the start line for their Team Sprint, an event where 3 riders race around the track 3 times with one rider coming off after completing a lap. From the offset it was clear that these guys were on a mission and by the second lap they were on record pace and they stopped the clock in a new SA record time of 51,89s. A great performance by these young men.
Day 2 had its highlights as well especially in the Boys U17 category where the competition was fierce and dominated by Jonathan Bouwer who won all his events and was rewarded with the Best U17 rider of the champs.
In the Junior men category Linwell Jansen and Matthew Fortuin went head to head in all their races and it was difficult to select the best junior of the champs as both of them showed phenomenal courage and determination in all of their races. Both riders received the best junior award for their performances.
In the other categories racing was also fast and furious and no one had it easy. With a couple of not too serious spills and crashes in between riders gave it their all as they rode the wall in an effort to secure a spot on the podium. It was beautiful and also satisfactory to see the joy and fulfillment on their faces as they received their medals in their respective races.
The last event of the champs saw the Elite men sprinters on the start line for their keirin event where riders start off by riding behind a scooter for 3 laps, once the scooter comes off the track the riders have 3 laps to hustle and give their all for that top spot on the podium, an event which is very thrilling to watch and always delivers some surprises. Jean Smit, the top favourite for the event had his work cut out as he was pushed all the way by Wade Theunissen who just managed to beat him to the line in a respectable time of 11,25s followed closely by Greame Ockhuis. An extraordinary win by Wade.
With the South African National Track Championships taking place from 11-16 December 2018 at the Bellville Velodrome it will be great to see all these talented riders racing against other provinces which always brings out more great, exciting, thrilling and fast pace track cycling action.
