Team Dimension Data for Qhubeka, together with their partners, sought to approach their video content at the 2019 Tour de France in a unique way.
“In one of the toughest editions of the race yet, in which Czech star Roman Kreuziger finished 16th on GC and we scored four top-10 results across the 21 tough stages, it was some of our work off the bicycle that gained acclaim and reaffirmed one of our team’s core missions of changing lives through bicycles.
We undertook a ‘secret’ project, to take eight young aspiring cyclists from the Velokhaya Life Cycling Academy from the Khayeltisha informal settlement outside Cape Town to the Grand Depart in Brussels. The same group, of which all but one had travelled abroad before, assisted in the video announcement of our team.
Only a handful of key staff members knew about this project, together with the race organisers, as the group also joined our team on the presentation stage in Brussels. It was a moment that encapsulated our team’s vision and opened our video sequence under the theme of ‘Inspire’.
In addition, our role as Ambassadors of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation saw the Chairman of the Laureus Academy, All Blacks rugby legend Sean Fitzpatrick, and Chairman of Laureus South Africa, Morne du Plessis, lead a delegation to celebrate Mandela Day with us on 18 July. Nelson Mandela was a founding patron of Laureus and so this was a particularly poignant visit.
These key moments, together with the multitude of unique elements made of up the professional world of cycling were all expertly captured by our outstanding videography team from T&W, in conjunction with our partner Supersport.
This take on the sport resulted in 21 short films of 60 seconds each produced, and in the process took our audience deep into the heart not only of our team but into this incredible event.
We have now consolidated this series into one feature piece, titled: ‘TDF 2019 | ONE DAY AT A TIME‘.”
