Du Toitskloof Wines Launches new MTB Trail

Du Toitskloof Wines

On Friday the 21st of September 40 riders took on what will soon become known as one of the best new mountain bike trails in the Western Cape –  the Du Toitskloof MTB Trail. After nearly 5 years in the making, the Du Toitskloof MTB Trail has already seen more than a thousand Cape Epic Riders in March, over 200 TransBreede Ultra Riders in January and for the 4th consecutive year teams of riders taking part in the Breedekloof Gravel & Grape.

The official trail launch took experienced and intermediate riders through their 22km mountain bike trail that consist out of a series of single-tracks, technical climbs, little jumps, doubles and a very unique river crossing – a 132m long suspended bridge over the Tierstel river.

“Absolutely beautiful trail – we’ve been waiting for this for a long time. I’d say the trail is intermediate to advanced, but definitely caters for beginners as well,” Joanna Dobinson from Biking in the Bosch. The riders came together for coffee at the newly opened Ou Meul Bakery at Du Toitskloof Wines after which a brief background and outline of the trail was given by Du Toitskloof Board Member, Johan De Wet and trail builder, Conrad Stoltz.

“This is a dream-come-true,” says Johan, “…and we’re so grateful for all the farm owners who bought into this vision by opening up their land for us to develop, ride and enjoy.”
At the halfway mark riders stopped to enjoy a glass of cold Du Toitskloof bubbly before returning back to the winery for a shower, lunch and drinks.

Du Toitskloof WinesThe Du Toitskloof MTB Trail consist of two routes, the shorter 14.5km Green Trail and the longer 22km Red Trail. Both routes are clearly marked to ensure that directions, escape routes and even potable water aren’t missed.

In addition to the trail, Du Toitskloof also created shower and bike-wash facilities. The cost for a day pass is R30 and can be paid by scanning the SnapScan barcode on the Trail Info Board at the start of the route.

Transbreede Ultra

The MTB enthusiasts at Du Toitskloof Wines along with Iqela Events kicked off 2018 with their first Transbreede Ultra as preparation for the Cape Epic in March 2018. Next year during the last weekend of January they plan on hosting this premium event again.
The TransBreede Ultra is a one-day MTB event comprising of 120km (or 60km for Half Ultra) on trails in Rawsonville, Slanghoek Valley and Bainskloof.

Du Toitskloof WinesDu Toitskloof Wines is the official host as the start and finish venue, so no transfers are needed, enough parking can be expected with shower facilities and a restaurant to be enjoyed after the race.

It is a tough course with high temperatures during summer, great single tracks, vineyard roads and mountainous areas with ascents of approximately 2100m.

The inaugural event had 213 riders on the start line with 177 finishers. Alban Lakata took overall first place in the 120km with overall female winner, Jennie Stenerhag.

“It was tough in a different way. There were many sandy areas and a lot of rocks. Harsh climbs and many single tracks.”

“I’m glad I’ve seen the route ahead of the Epic and obviously happy with the result,” Jennie Stenerhag about the Transbreede Ultra.Du Toitskloof Wines

If you’re training for the Cape Epic in 2019 or just an avid MTB rider, lock down that last weekend in January and join Du Toitskloof Wines for this premium event in the new year.
