The world’s first 7-day gravel adventure race which finished in Plettenburg Bay yesterday, was won by former MTB World Champion Christoph Sauser and Craig Boyes, riding for team Songo.info.
The pair dominated the 7-day Rainmaker RollerCoaster, with only one other team claiming a stage win. South African riders Shameeg Sallie and Kevin Benkenstein for team Velokhaya won a hard fought victory on Day 4, pipping the overall winners to the line by 2 seconds.
Christoph Sauser: “It was an amazing gravel ride, and an excellent new event for the calendar. Exploring beautiful new landscapes with my bicycle, together with great company made me very happy.”
The mixed team competition was won by newly weds Marion Pelata and Carlos Clement who rode the event on their honeymoon, with the Masters jersey category won by Pretoria cyclists Bruce Reyneke and partner Roberto Gnudi.
Participants can either race the event in teams of two, or ride in one of the “ride” groups supported by the HotChillee Ride Captains. Riding for fun this year were former Italian national rider Leonardo Thomas Cerutti, Daniel Hughes of Meteor X Giordana, Austin Texas and UK YouTube Vlogger Francis Cade.
Leonardo Thomas Cerutti: “10/10.”
Dan Hughes: “What an experience. Huge mountainous descents, lung busting climbs and super fast gravel rollers as we rode in awe of this supreme South African beauty.”
Francis Cade: “It was awesome.”
